Rising violence not inevitable, says mayor

Dunedin Mayor Dave Cull says he won't accept that rising violence in the city is an inevitable part of a national trend.

A senior police officer, Inspector Alistair Dickie, said this week that violent crime is on the rise in Dunedin - in line with national trends - though he denies that that means it's something the city has to tolerate.

Mr Cull says residents shouldn't accept loutish and violent behaviour and should report any they see.

He says he has several ideas for improving the safety of some areas and will be talking to the city council about the issue.
