Northland bay still feeling effect of tsunami

Unusually high waves are still surging in a bay near Russell, about five days after the 11 March Japanese tsunami was first felt in New Zealand.

A 50-year-old breakwater around an oyster farm in Orongo Bay was destroyed by the constant pounding of wave surges from the tsunami.

The oyster farm owner, Alex Clifford, says that at the height of the surge the water was just over a metre higher than normal, and that they're still 200-300 millimetres above normal.

Once conditions improve, Mr Clifford says, the breakwater will be rebuilt.
