Extra RWC games may cost Auckland $1m each - councillor

An Auckland councillor expects the city's extra Rugby World Cup games to cost ratepayers about $1 million a match.

The city will host at least two extra games, which are being moved from Christchurch because of damage in the 22 February earthquake to the AMI Stadium.

Councillor Cameron Brewer says he understands it will cost about $1 million to host each game.

He says he would not expect much opposition from councillors to paying this, because the games will be of huge economic benefit.

Auckland Council spokesperson says the cost of hosting the games has not yet been fully worked out.

Rugby World Cup organisers are still to decide where they will allocate the five pool games scheduled for Christchurch.
