Fewer teams to compete for cricket World Cup

The number of nations that will compete at the next cricket World Cup in New Zealand and Australia has been cut from 14 to 10.

The International Cricket Council announced the plan last year but it has only now been ratified by the its board.

Only full ICC members will compete in the 2015 tournament, while the 10 teams for the event in 2019 will be decided by qualification.

This means there is no place for the likes of Ireland, who beat England in pool play and Ireland captain William Porterfield feels that the ICC has sold them out.

The possibility of a 12-team tournament was also discussed, but rejected by the ICC's executive board.
