Grant for veterans to attend Battle of Crete event

8:28 pm on 19 April 2011

Eligible war veterans will receive $2000 from the New Zealand Government to help them travel to commemorations marking the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Crete.

Defence Minister Wayne Mapp says the event on 21 May will be the last chance for many veterans to pay their respects to those who died there.

Dr Mapp says veterans who have been eligible for similar grants in the past will still be able to apply.

Roye Hammond, 92, is going to Crete and believes the grant is enough, considering veterans who have already received a similar allowance were not expecting any more funding. He is considering applying for it.

The grant will be administered by Veterans' Affairs New Zealand.
