Timaru coolstore blaze extinguished

2:54 pm on 24 April 2011

The Fire Service says a blaze in a Timaru cool store has been extinguished.

The Fire Service was called to the site shortly before 11.30am on Sunday.

Six fire crews travelled from around South Canterbury to fight the fire on Dawson Street in the city's port area.

The General Manager of the company that owns the coolstore Kevin Cahill says there has been very little damage to the building, and about 1000 tonnes of food products inside it are unspoilt.

Fire crews were dampening down hotspots on Sunday afternoon and waiting for Fire Safety Investigators to arrive from Christchurch to determine the cause of the blaze.
