10:00 am on 28 April 2011

Severe weather continues to pound the North Island with galeforce winds in the west and heavy rain in the east.

MetService says rain eased in Hawke's Bay on Wednesday morning, but has now set in again.

It is forecasting another 80 to 120 millimetres of rain in the Tararua and Hawke's Bay districts until midday on Thursday.

A severe wind warning is in place for western parts of the country, including Taranaki, Kapiti, Wellington and Marlborough Sounds.

MetService says it is forecasting southeast gales of up to 110km/h, but winds should ease from about 6pm on Wednesday.
