$54m funding boost for maternity sector

7:24 pm on 5 May 2011

The maternity sector is to get a funding boost of $54 million.

Health Minister Tony Ryall says the money will mean better teamwork and extra help for mothers and babies who need it.

The Government will inject $33 million over the next four years to improve the safety and quality of maternity services.

Another $21 million will be spent on services for newborn babies.

These include better co-ordination of services, more parenting information and steps to help vulnerable mothers.

The Government says the extra funding will mean an extra 54,000 visits by health workers to about 18,000 mothers.
