Dunedin primary school merger closer

6:58 am on 6 May 2011

Merging of five primary schools in South Dunedin is a step closer, with Education Minister Anne Tolley announcing her preferred options.

Because of falling rolls, Ms Tolley wants to merge Caversham, College Street and Calton Hill Schools as a year one to eight primary school, with two campuses.

Macandrew Intermediate and Forbury Schools would be merged as another year one to 8 school.

Caversham School principal Mike Darracott says some parents are worried about the roll being too big.

He also says some teachers and staff would lose their jobs.

The boards of the schools have 28 days to make comments, before a final decision is announced.
