Kiwi Steel fined for health and safety breaches

One of the country's biggest steel manufacturers has been fined $237,500 for multiple breaches of health and safety laws.

Kiwi Steel New Zealand Limited was fined in the Manukau District Court.

It failed to report accidents in the workplace and failed to install adequate machine guards, resulting in workers suffering hand and foot injuries.

The Judge says there was no evidence of any effective preventative measures being put in place, until the Department of Labour became involved.

The Department of Labour says every year hundreds of people are injured by poorly guarded machinery, and employers must take all practicable steps to ensure workers can operate machinery safely.
