Cycle death to be added to coroner's inquiry

9:32 pm on 2 June 2011

The death of a cyclist in Hamilton will be added to a joint inquest by the Waikato Coroner into a spate of cycle deaths in this country.

A 57-year-old man died on Wednesday when his bike and a truck collided. He was dragged for a short distance before being run over.

It brings the total of bicycle fatalities involving vehicles to 35 since 2007.

Waikato coroner Gordon Matenga will inquire into the last nine deaths and travel to four regions for a joint inquest.

The first will be held in Palmerston North on 21 July and will be followed by hearings in Hamilton, Auckland and Wellington.
