'Shocking' seat belt offence rate

8:50 am on 10 June 2011

Hundreds of thousands of seat belt offences have been committed in recent years, official figures show.

In the past five years, 361,000 seat belt offences were committed.

Since 2000, failure to wear a seat belt contributed to 996 road deaths, the figures show.

The Automobile Association says the data is shocking, and the Government needs to focus on the wearing of seat belts to save lives.

But police say they actively target those who don't buckle up, and say the rate of seat belt wearing, at 96%, is the highest in the world.

The Transport Agency says a national safety belt advertising campaign hasn't been run in two years because it would be unlikely to influence the 4% who ignore the law.
