Marlborough Sounds shellfish ban lifted

3:22 pm on 22 June 2011

A three-month ban on harvesting shellfish in part of the Marlborough Sounds has been lifted by health authorities.

The ban was imposed in March after the paralytic shellfish poisoning toxin was found in Queen Charlotte Sound and Tory Channel.

The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board says although the algae bloom that caused the contamination disappeared in May, it has taken several weeks for the toxin to be flushed from the shellfish.
