A Whangarei animal park has pleaded guilty to charges relating to the death of a keeper who was mauled by a tiger.

Dalu Mncube was attacked by a white Bengal tiger in 2009, when he entered its enclosure at Zion Wildlife Gardens.

The Department of Labour charged Zion Wildlife Services and Zion Wildlife Gardens with offences under the Health and Safety Act.

The companies will be sentenced in Whangarei on 14 July and could face a fine of up to $100,000.

The Ministry of Agriculture closed the park temporarily after the fatality, and ordered alterations to several big cat enclosures to improve safety.
