Prominent New Zealand author Alan Duff has declared himself bankrupt.

The author declared bankruptcy in France, ending a three-year wait by creditors owed more than $3 million.

His bankruptcy will now be handled by an official assignee in Napier.

Mr Duff was almost declared bankrupt in 2008 and moved to France to try and write his way out of debt.

In a statement, he says he has worked very hard to break into the European book market, without success.

Mr Duff says he will stay in France while continuing to write, but will eventually return to New Zealand.
