Wellington Zoo says it has been flooded with donations of cash and food for the penguin known as Happy Feet.

The emperor penguin was found on Peka Peka Beach on the Kapiti Coast in June.

The zoo, which is caring for the bird, has now reached a $10,000 fundraising target for its care.

Vets have operated four times to remove sticks and sand the bird swallowed.

Zoo spokesperson Kate Baker says donations are covering the cost of treating and feeding Happy Feet.
