Growing fears for missing elderly hunter

5:36 pm on 7 July 2011

Police have growing concerns for an elderly man missing in Ashley Gorge in North Canterbury.

Alan Hill, 83, was reported missing on Wednesday night after he did not return from one of his regular possum hunting trips on time.

Mr Hill entered the gorge about 7am and had been expected out by dusk. Police were notified when a local farmer realised that the hunter's vehicle was still parked near his house.

Sergeant Tony Tully says eight teams of searchers have been at the site on Thursday, along with dog teams and two helicopters using thermal imaging equipment.

Police say they have found a pair of gloves believed to be Mr Hill's and a trap line.

Mr Tully a limited search team will remain in the area overnight. Conditions have been described as cold, windy and rainy.
