Special court to deal with World Cup arrests in Auckland

8:25 am on 9 July 2011

People arrested in Auckland during the Rugby World Cup will be dealt with in a special courtroom.

The Ministry of Justice is allocating a room at the Auckland District Court to handle tournament-related arrests only.

It will be in place for two weeks from 17 October, but the ministry says it could revert to dealing with normal court matters if there is no overwhelming number of arrests.

Courts general manager Paula Tesoriero says planning is underway to ensure other courts around the country can deal with a possible influx of work.

She says other trials will continue as normal.
