Manawatu farmers told to move stock as rivers rise

6:05 pm on 13 July 2011

Farmers in Manawatu are being warned to move stock from the Moutoa floodway before a possible opening of the floodgates.

The regional council says it is keeping a close eye on river levels and if rain continues, as predicted, the Moutoa floodgates will be opened early on Thursday.

Incident controller Allan Cook says the Manawatu River is again rising after more heavy rain on Wednesday.

Mr Cook says the Whanganui and Rangitikei rivers are on the way up but these are not causing concern.

The Whangaehu River may reach eight metres later on Thursday which could result in some road closures, he says.
