Cellphone tickets down

9:34 pm on 30 July 2011

The number of tickets issued for hand-held cell phone use while driving is at its lowest level in 18 months.

June saw 457 fines issued by the police, eight below the number recorded in December 2009 and January 2010.

An average of 700 tickets were issued each month in the six months prior to June.

Police say it is too early to draw conclusions about the cause of the drop.
