An online advocacy group is calling for internet service providers to explain why their broadband packages have some of the lowest data limits in the world.
Some providers have increased their data caps recently, but Internet NZ says they're still very low.
The group says 85% to 90% of New Zealand's internet traffic comes from overseas via the Southern Cross cable, the cost of using which is the same for New Zealand as Australia - yet Australian broadband packages offer up to 10 times more downloads.
Internet NZ chief executive Vikram Kumar says the likely reasons are the lack of market competition and the fact that providers don't think the matter is important.
