Commuter rail service 'good for business links'

The chairman of the Auckland Council Transport Committee says a commuter train between Hamilton and Auckland could provide a cost-effective travel option for businesses with interests in both cities.

Members of a working party from the Auckland and Waikato councils made the journey from Hamilton to Auckland on Friday to evaluate a refurbished Silver Fern railcar that could be used for such a service.

Transport committee chairman Mike Lee says a rail service could enhance business links for companies such as Fonterra that have major interests in both places.

He says a lot of Auckland's growth will happen along the southern corridor, so it makes sense to use the railway.
