An undersea earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 has struck 160 kilometres north-east of Whakatane.
GeoNet says the quake was recorded at 11.42pm on Friday at a depth of 160 kilometres.
It was felt from Bay of Plenty to Hawke's Bay.
