Man shot by police remains in critical condition

7:32 pm on 21 October 2011

A man shot by police in the Hawke's Bay town of Otane this week remains in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital.

Two investigations are under way into the shooting just before midnight on Wednesday, but Police Commissioner Peter Marshall says he has told the two officers involved that they have the full support of police.

Police say the man threatened to shoot the officers, then told them he was carrying a hand grenade and a gun.

The 48-year-old was later found to only be carrying a bottle and some hand tools.

The man, who has not been named, underwent surgery at Hawke's Bay hospital but was transferred to Christchurch Hospital for further treatment.
