$10 million seized through crime recovery legislation

Police say more than $10 million worth of cash and assets have been taken away from criminals through government legislation.

The Criminal Proceeds Recovery Act was introduced about two years ago.

Police commissioner Peter Marshall says every dollar its recovery unit receives in proceeds goes back into crime prevention.

He says police began with a trickle of cases in the first year but the tap is now well and truly turned on.

Mr Marshall says about $43 million worth of assets are expected to go through the courts soon.

This week, $14 million worth of assets were seized in a large police operation in Auckland in relation to the supply and distribution of illegal drugs.
