The first athletes of an expected 200-member New Zealand team to compete at the 2012 Olympic Games have been announced.

A 12-person sailing squad has been selected for the London Games, with defending Olympic boardsailing champion Tom Ashley the notable absentee.

The boardsailing spot has instead gone to Jon Paul Tobin, who finished fifth at the recent world championships off Freemantle, which doubled as an Olympic selection regatta.

Ashely finished one place behind Tobin.

The rest of the team is: Peter Burling and Blair Tuke in the 49er class, Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie in the women's 470, Andrew Murdoch in the laser class, Paul Snow Hansen and Jason Saunders the men's 470, Stephanie Hazard, Jenna Hansen and Susannah Pyatt in women's match racing and Sara Winther in the laser radial.
