More arrivals expected

More people are expected to move to New Zealand from Britain and Europe over coming months, as the economy improves and there are better job prospects.

Official figures show New Zealand's migration loss slowed to 50 in November, from a revised loss of 650 in October.

But on an annual basis, New Zealand had its largest net migration loss in a decade.

Nevertheless, ASB Bank chief economist Nick Tuffley says the monthly figures suggests reasons for shifting overseas may not be attractive as they once were.

''Initial signs show fewer people want to move offshore,'' he said.

Mr Tuffley says fewer people are expected to move to Australia where job prospects aren't as strong as in the past.

He says at the same time, more people are expected to migrate here from Britain and Europe as the economy improves.

Separately, the number of tourists rose 1.7% in November, compared with the same period a year ago, with the earlier boost from the Rugby World Cup tournament dissipating.
