9:58 pm on 23 December 2011

A man has been arrested and charged after two girls were hit by a vehicle in Manurewa on Thursday evening.

One of the girls, who is eight, is in a serious condition in hospital and the other is at home.

Police say the girls were walking along Wordsworth Road when they were hit by the car just before 8pm.

They were thrown into a garden, where the car also ended up after crashing through a fence.

Police suspect high speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.

The driver and the passenger of the vehicle were held at the scene by bystanders until police arrived.

A man, 27, is to appear in Manukau District Court charged with driving with excess breath alcohol causing injury.

Police say more charges may follow.

Meanwhile, Wordsworth Road residents say the road is notorious for speeding drivers and they would like to see speed humps installed.

Auckland Transport says the residents should contact them if they are worried by the speed of motorists in their street.
