A 15-month-old boy has been bitten in the face by a dog in the Bay of Plenty town of Edgecumbe.
The boy was with his parents at the house of another family member when the dog attacked him just after 10am on Sunday.
A hospital spokesperson said the young child was extremely lucky, as the punture wounds were just below his eyes. The boy has been released from hospital.
The dog's owner was also seriously bitten and was expected to be released from Whakatane Hospital on Sunday.
The police are investigating the incident.
