Driver who injured police officer to be deported

10:08 pm on 31 July 2008

The Immigration Service intends to deport a man who police say reversed his car into a police officer in Auckland on Wednesday night.

Ioelu Peniamina, 44, pleaded guilty in Waitakere District Court on Thursday to being twice the legal limit in Henderson, although he says injuring the officer was an accident.

Police say the unnamed officer will be off work for several months as she recovers from a broken pelvis and back injuries.

They say Peniamina was ordered to pull over, and as the constable walked away he reversed into her, pinning the officer against the patrol car.

The Immigration Service says Peniamina, who was born in Tuvalu, arrived in New Zealand in September 2005. It says he is an overstayer and he has been served with a removal order.

Peniamina was released on bail to reappear in court in August.
