Prison staff look up porn, inmate details on work computers

Prison staff have been caught eight times during the past year inappropriately accessing pornography as well as the private details of high-profile inmates.

But no Corrections Department worker has lost his or her job as a result of the misconduct.

Corrections says in the year from November 2010 to November 2011, final written warnings were issued to three staff for viewing sexually explicit images.

One worker received a final written warning for accessing an offensive website, and another was rebuked for accessing inappropriate images.

Staff have also been caught looking up offenders' details without authorisation.

On one occasion, Corrections says a staff member viewed the records of some high profile prisoners out of curiosity.

Two more were caught accessing offenders' information then acting on it inappropriately.

But Corrections says no prisoner records were altered, and it describes the level of abuse as very low.

Corrections Association president Beven Hanlon says internet access at work is relatively new for prisons staff, being brought in only about 12 months ago, and hopefully as the year goes on the figures will be even lower.
