Guilty plea entered to Clutha murder charge

A man jointly accused of murdering a South Otago teenager has entered a guilty plea in the High Court at Dunedin.

The body of dairy farm worker Michael Hutchings, 18, was found in the Clutha River in January, wrapped in a mattress cover and weighed down with steel bars.

His killer, 37, cannot be named because of an interim suppression order. He previously denied the charge, but has changed his plea.

He said he inflicted the stab wounds that killed Mr Hutchings, and that he and his female co-accused then dumped the body in the Clutha River.

The co-accused, a 29-year-old woman, has pleaded not guilty to murder and will face trial.

The man will be sentenced on 25 September. The woman will attend a pre-trial hearing on 5 September.

They pair are also jointly accused of raping a girl, aged 15, in a separate case.
