Vanuatu leader names new internal affairs minister

The Vanuatu prime minister, Moana Carcasses, has named the MP for Banks/Torres, Christophe Emmelee, as the new minister of internal affairs.

He replaces Patrick Crowby who died at the beginning of the year.

The prime minister's move comes after reports on Monday that three ministers had quit the government and are backing a motion for a vote of no confidence, which is due to be heard next Tuesday.

The opposition grouping says the appointment of Mr Emmelee does not affect their motion.

The 27 signatories are now ensconced at the Tropica Hotel just outside Port Vila.

Meanwhile Mr Carcasses says four MPs have already asked to return and he is confident he can defeat the motions.
