New Zealand made an ominous start to the Oceania Under 20 Women's Football Championship, thumping Vanuatu 12-0 in Auckland on Monday.

The Junior Football Ferns opened the scoring after just seven minutes and led 9-0 at half-time.

In the other match on day one Papua New Guinea thumped Tonga 4-0, with all goals coming in the second half.

PNG midfielder Dinna Awele broke the deadlock in the 51st minute before further goals to Talitha Irakau, Yvonne Gabong and Nicolla Niaman sealed a convincing result.

The overall winner will represent Oceania at the U20 Women's World Cup in Canada in August.
