The Fiji National Rugby League is optimistic about its chances of hosting matches at the 2017 World Cup.

Australia and New Zealand were this week named joint hosts, while at least two matches will be played in Port Moresby.

The Chair of the Fiji National Rugby League, Peni Musunamasi, says he's had discussion with the International Federation about including Fiji among the host countries and is upbeat about their chances.

"We would like to host our pool here in Fiji. Hopefully that will happen, since we have proved ourselves being in the top four in the last two World Cups. I have just yet to receive confirmation from them in regards to this. I think it will take a while to confirm this, that I need to go through government for support but I know the government will be happy to assist us host our pool in the 2017 World Cup."

Peni Musunamasi says Fiji would have no problem meeting the criteria for host stadiums, with upgrades currently underway at a number of venues.
