Fiji election rules now due by next week

Reports from Fiji say the much anticipated rules around this year's elections will now be out by the end of next week.

The Electoral Decree will include the regulations governing the polls which have been promised by the end of September.

It was originally due by the end of last month.

Fiji media report that the head of the Electoral Commission, Chen BunnYoung, has put the delay down to the Commission's discussions with the Solicitor General's office over the decree.

Mr Young says the decree has to bring about a fair and credible election.

According to the Fiji Times the commission chairman also says a supervisor of elections will be appointed by the end of the month.

The paper reports Mr Young says the appointment is a priority and to have him appointed one month before the election would be ridiculous.
