Fiji "pleased" over travel ban lifting

4:51 pm on 31 March 2014

The government of Fiji says it is pleased with the decision of the Australian and New Zealand governments to lift all existing sanctions against Fiji.

In a statement it says it has always believed the sanctions were ill conceived and served only to discourage talented and qualified individuals from serving the Fijian people.

New Zealand has followed Australia in announcing a formal lifting of the travle ban against certain members of the governing regime and the military which were introduced after the December 2006 coup.

Fiji says the removal of sanctions is a positive step towards restoring normal relations between the governments and it looks forward to working with Australia and New Zealand on a number of areas of shared interest.
