Emergency repairs needed to damaged Solomons water reservoir

Authorities in Solomon Islands say damage to a main water reservoir following last week's severe flooding means they are having to look for alternative sources.

The Director of the National Disaster Management Office says donor agencies are hiring water tanks and delivering them to communities around Honiara.

Loti Yates says the Solomon Islands Water Authority is working on improving the water systems but its assessment has revealed problems.

"But they've just found that there's some damage to the main source in one of the reservoirs. One of the key activities that we would like to do in that area is to quickly do emergency repairs to water supply sources and maybe other supply sources that we can have access to."

Loti Yates says water is currently being harvested from main functioning reservoirs and then carted to areas in need.
