Sport: PNG survive scare at T20 cricket trophy

10:38 am on 9 May 2014

Papua New Guinea and Japan sit on top of the standings after the second day of the East Asia-Pacific Women's Cricket Trophy in Japan.

In the final game of the day, a solid display from Samoa in the field left the PNG team with a modest final score of just 99 runs in their 20 overs.

But PNG produced a remarkable comeback, bowling Samoa out for just 75 runs in the 15th over.

The PNG all-rounder Kila Leka-Amini says they are delighted with the win.

"I don't know how to describe the feeling, we're just very happy, happy with the result, we just kept fighting, so super excited."

The result has set up a showdown between PNG and Japan Saturday morning.

In other results the invitational side Cricket Without Borders got their first win of the competition in a closely contested match against the Cook Islands.

And Japan downed Vanuatu, ticking off their third win of the tournament.
