A shortage of maths and science teachers in Samoa is set to be overcome with 12 scholarships on offer at the National University.

Australia and New Zealand have partnered with Samoa to offer scholarships to a field of what the Australian High Commission in Apia says are more than 100 interested students.

The three-year programme will include eight scholarships in the faculty of science and four in the faculty of education at the university.

Australia's Counsellor for Development to Samoa, Anthony Stannard, says it's the first time in the history of the scholarship program that scholarships have been offered specifically for teachers.
