Saipan mayor Flores dies aged 65

The mayor of Saipan in the Northern Marianas, Donald Flores, has died after suffering a massive stroke.

He was 65 years old.

Mr Flores suffered the stroke on Saturday while driving to an appointment.

He was immediately put into the hospital's intensive care unit where he remained on life support until his passing.

The Governor, Eloy Inos, and the Lieutenant Governor, Jude Hofschneider, have extended their condolences to his family.

He will be given a state funeral.

Donald Flores, who was born in Guam, became the mayor of Saipan four years ago as a Republican and was seeking re-election this year as an independent.
