In American Samoa, the first local General Manager for the cannery, Starkist Samoa, has tendered his resignation.
While officials at StarKist have not confirmed nor commented on the matter, industry sources say Brett Butler made known he was stepping down during a managers meeting last Friday.
He cited his wish to spend time with his family.
One manager said they were surprised with the announcement and officials of Starkist are hoping he changes his mind.
His resignation will be effective June 15.
Mr Butler has been general manager of StarKist Samoa, which employs about 2000 people, since June of 2005.
