China commits funds to Fiji polls

China has committed US$790,000 towards helping Fiji prepare for the September election.

Fiji's acting prime minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says the assistance refelects the strong relations between the two countries.

China's ambassador to Suva Huang Yong says China was happy to see the progress Fiji was making towards elections.

Papua New Guinea has committed $10 million in assistance and the United States $0.5 million.

Several other countries including Australia and New Zealand are providing technical assistance for the polls.
