Samoa's prime minister Tuilaepa Sailele has signed a memorandum of understanding with the US cannery, Bumble Bee, that would pave the way for the company to set up a fish loin plant at the Matautu wharf.

The Bumble Bee chief executive, Chris Lischewski, signed the MOU last week while on a visit to Samoa.

American Samoa businessman, Carlos Sanchez, who has been involved in the negotiations, says the MOU provides tax exemptions, land use rights and other incentives for the company.

Bumble Bee hopes to begin construction of its plant before the end of the year.

The company also has plans to build a fish meal plant at another location in Samoa.
