PNG Parliament extends website

2:30 pm on 4 July 2014

Papua New Guinea's parliament website is offering greater public access to information about the parliament, its members and services.

The website provides access to Hansard records of proceedings and debates, including records of attendance, voting, questions and discussions made in the chamber.

It's now also offering an mobile phone SMS/Text query system whereby people can find out information about their local MP and some of their activities.

The system is the result of an initiative between the Speaker of parliament and the European Union, executed by Transparency International PNG.

A TI PNG board member, Emmanual Narokobi, says the Speaker, Theo Zurenuoc, is keen to foster more public awareness about the daily operation of parliament.

"Most perceptions and information that people got about members of parliament was about politics, but not the actual workings of parliament. So that was the Speaker's aim, in terms of getting information out there and getting contact details and more open relationship in time between the people and members of parliament."
