Pago Pago cannery ordered to stop production

2:48 pm on 8 July 2014

A cannery in American Samoa may resume production soon after a pipeline the environmental agency says is responsible for damage to the Pago Pago Harbour has been fixed.

Last week the American Samoa Environmental Protection Agency gave StarKist Samoa a stop order because of a problem with a discharge pipe below the Starkist pier.

The body blames the cannery for the discoloration of the water in the harbour, and says waste discharge is threatening marine life.

Our correspondent, Monica Miller, says divers worked all weekend to fix the rupture and have today fixed it.

But she says the stop order will remain until ASEPA gives approval for operations to resume.

"The problem has been fixed but ASEPA has to do an inspection then lift the cease and desist order that has been given, but as of yet, that has not been given. I believe an inspection has to be carried out first."
