Yap bans plastic bags

7:22 am on 12 July 2014

One of the states in the Federated States of Micronesia, Yap, has banned the use of plastic bags.

Retailers are no longer allowed to give customers plastic grocery bags, otherwise they'll face a one hundred US dollar fine.

Plastic bags that are exempt from the ban include rubbish bin liners, fresh produce bags, freezer bags and snap-lock bags, as well as plastic that is an integral part of a product's packaging.

The Marianas Variety reports the ban is consistent with the government's attempts to reduce plastic waste and pollution.
