Police in Papua New Guinea have been accused of raiding and burning down a village in Southern Highlands province, which has left two people dead and hundreds homeless.
EMTV reports truckloads of armed police raided Lumbi village on the morning of the 8th of July after some youths attacked police officers and stole their firearms the previous afternoon.
The villagers claim that Mendi police then took valuable items, including live pigs, and burnt down the village including houses, shops and food gardens.
They claim that one elderly woman died after drowning in a fast-flowing river while trying to flee, and a man died when he had an asthma attack because his medication had been incinerated.
