The French Polynesian government has dismissed its special representative in Paris and abolished the position.
The job was created last year and filled by a former French overseas territories minister, Brigitte Girardin, who had served in the era of Jacques Chirac.
In a statement, the presidency says the position is no longer needed in part because of budgetary constraints.
On her appointment, the opposition said Mrs Girandin was being paid 27,000 US dollars a month.
The government said the assertion was grotesque, however it gave no other figure.
