An experienced Nauru Chiefs team have high expectations going into this year's AFL International Cup, which kicks off in Australia this weekend.

The Chiefs finished in sixth place at the last event three years ago and coach Paner Baguga has a strong core to his squad, with just five new faces among the 34 players.

Their first match is in Melbourne on Sunday against newcomers Indonesia while defending champs Ireland, and Pacific rivals Fiji are also in their six team pool.

Paner Baguga says it's a big tournament for them and the aim is to make Nauru proud.

"We just had our tournament the last couple of months that ended and we put together a team and we trained for three months for this tournament. Nothing has changed with the Nauru Chiefs with their game-style. We're just concentrating on set plays and hard running, zoning, and all that kind of stuff. We think we have a good chance".
